The Weekly Optimist Newsletter: A Construct of Time

Time is the most valuable measurement. Appreciate it. Acknowledge it. It is priceless.

Time measures many aspects of our lives. It measures our tasks and dictates our due dates. It also measures our relationships and in some ways our health. Time to go. Time to eat. Time to not eat. Time to move on. Living for more time can mean you lived well or lived a healthy life.

Time can influence our emotions and actions. It keeps track of our days, nights, years, and lives. But above all, time measures motion. The instruments we use to calculate the length of our day are unique to Earth. Time depends on the rotation of our planet and its effect on where and when the light of the Sun enters Earth. The clock, daylight, starlight, the wrinkles on our faces, and the aches and pains of aging all represent the forces of time and motion on our planet.

Eventually so much time will pass that it will no longer exist based on the instruments and constructs of humankind. Motion will become motionless, at least from human perception. But the passage of time will remain. If time measures motion and motion is controlled by things other than humans, what is to come of time once humanity is extinct?

You may have noticed by now that I like to ask questions that have no answer. Well, no answer that we can come up with and no answer that everyone agrees on or considers true. I find it important to get comfortable with the unknown as it allows us to let go of our perception of control. It opens our minds to critical thinking and critical conversation.

Our concept of time is very interesting. When we hear the word “time” many of us associate it with constraints. The constraints from our wristwatch or wall clock. If we take a moment to recognize just how quickly our version(s) of time passes, we might find the time to notice time and appreciate it, but it’s infrequent.

Many of us are also told to make the most of our time, to spend our time, for a long time, to create more time. It is always passing and we get as much as we are given. That is another unknown. How do you spend your time?

“Time isn’t the main thing. It is the only thing.” – Miles Davis

“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you are the pilot.” – Mike Altschuler
